You are right where you belong

We hear much talk about this generation being the ‘entitlement generation’. You know, whiners who believe the world owes them something because everybody has done them wrong or they were simply raised with too much ‘positive reinforcement’ and not enough consequence or discipline.

whiner-clipart-whiner

I’m not going to argue the merits of this point, but I will simply state an irrefutable law of life. You are exactly where you belong and deserve to be. The good news is…you can change that at any time.

You are where you are based solely on the choices you have made. Sure, you can sing the ‘somebody done me wrong’ song all day, but in the end you will not escape the fact that where you are is totally a factor of your mindset and the choices that got you this far. If you watch TV, do you choose programming that enriches your mind or numbs it to forget about the day’s problems? If you read books, do you choose self-help, biography, or romance? This is not a criticism of your choices, just a simple example of how they effect where you are mentally. You can do things that will move you forward, move your backwards, or keep you right where you are. The choice is yours.

You have what you have based solely on the actions you have taken. Yah, but…the government this, and the economy that…Blah, blah, blah, woe is me.  There are hundreds of stories of people in the world who have been through much worse than anything that has ever happened to you and they have succeeded because they wouldn’t allow the world to keep them down. They set goals, made plans, and took action. Nelson Mandela was a prisoner. Elie Weisel was in a concentration camp. Stephen Hawking uses wheelchair and keyboard. Henry Food had no money and less than a year of formal schooling. And…remind me again what your excuse is?

beliefs-thoughts-actions-resultsYou are the person you deserve to be because of the effort you put into creating yourself. Your beliefs determine your thoughts, which determine your actions, which create the results you have today. Let’s do a simple mindset check. Take a look at the last 10 posts you put on social media. Assign an emotion or description to each one. Now count how many were happy, celebratory, angry, loving, punishing, educational, spiritual, revengeful, or just plain negative. Take a good look at the difference between the positive and negative posts. This may give you an indication of your general mindset.

You are the sum of your 5 closest friends. Now, go back to the previous paragraph and look at the comments to your posts from friends. Are they sympathetic, compassionate, helpful, or are they angry, confrontational, argumentative? ‘It’s hard to soar with the eagles when you flock with turkeys’, goes an old saying. My mother was fond of, ‘you are the company you keep’. Are your friends supportive in a good way? Do they help you up or keep you down. This can be a sobering realization for some people.

YOU CAN CHANGE AT ANY TIME! Yes, you can. Start right now by examining your BELIEF systems and questioning them. Make an effort to THINK in a positive fashion. Take ACTIONS that will lead you toward a good goal and you will see the RESULTS that more appropriately match what you feel you deserve. Or…continue doing what you are doing and getting what you are getting. The choice is always yours.

If you want some help making changes, setting goals, and realizing your dreams, contact me. I am always eager to assist.

Becoming an Entrepreneur

3 Simple Steps for Entrepreneurial Success

I ran across this article and thought I should share because so many people I talk with want to start their own business. Dawn’s 3 step formula is a good one, but of course over-simplified because it is a short article on a long subject. I actually work with a 5 step process that achieves similar results – Know what you want, have a plan and a success coach, take consistent action, review your progress, renew your goals.

If you are thinking of starting your own business, give me a call at 603-767-6500. I have 30 years of experience in starting 6 businesses. I may be able to help you figure out which ideas are worth taking action on and what actions to take.

3-Steps3 Simple Steps for Entrepreneurial Success
By Dawn Goldberg Shuler

One characteristic that seems to be universal for entrepreneurs is that we have ideas. Not just one here or there, but a TON. Ideas every day. Multiple ideas in a day.

You probably understand that you can’t act upon and bring to fruition every single idea. You have to be selective. Some ideas will work; others won’t.

So, then you are stuck in a dilemma: do you take action or not? Not all ideas are worthy of taking to their end game, but how do you figure out which ones are worthy? And so you might stay stuck, and you may not follow many ideas at all.

Your success as an entrepreneur depends upon your continual growth, evolution, and forward movement. And your ideas are how that growth, evolution, and movement manifest.

Here’s my simple Success Plan for Entrepreneurs:

  1. Have an idea
  2. Act upon said idea
  3. Follow through and complete idea

Honestly, the place where I see most entrepreneurs falter is #3 – the follow through and complete. Now, sometimes you might realize, as you play with an idea, that it’s not really sound, or it’s not the right time. That scenario is not what causes entrepreneurs to fail.

What I mean is the idea that goes so far and then… nothing. In this case, it’s not because you’ve figured out that it’s not worthy. It’s that you’re onto the next idea. Or the completion and follow-through stage isn’t nearly as fun as the idea generating and playful stage. Or you get stuck because you haven’t figured out the next steps.

And that’s where entrepreneurs fall down. They don’t complete.

So, let’s look at those 3 steps again.

  1. Have an idea
  2. Act upon said idea
  3. Follow through and complete idea

What could the potential be for some of the ideas you have knocking around in your head? What if you took one of your great ideas, and followed it through, from baby stage, to toddlerhood, to teenage years, to final all-growed-up?

Here’s what I’m challenging you to do…

  1. Write down your current 5 top, most amazing, sexy, jazzy, juicy ideas.
  2. For each idea, describe what it would look like if that idea was birthed into the world in full form. Use as many concrete, tangible details as you can.
  3. For each idea, plan all the steps you would need to take (that you can think of – no stressing allowed!) in order to bring that idea to fruition.
  4. Look over your list. Now, what idea(s) sound the most promising, the most profitable, and the most fun?
  5. Pick one, and start scheduling the to-do’s from step #3 into your schedule.

A few notes as you go through this process:

  • Not every idea should be acted upon. Sometimes an idea is just a pathway to a different idea.
  • SOME ideas should be acted upon.
  • If an idea doesn’t go anywhere, it just stays an idea. What this means in English: at some point, you have to take action in order for it to become a reality.
  • This process takes time; there is no getting around that.

Play with these 3 steps and my challenge – I would love to hear what idea is burning for you to take action on!

Finding your FOCUS

“With all the crazy stuff that you do, how do you find your focus?” A dear friend ask me this questions recently and I never really thought about it because I just always had too many irons in the fire and learned to juggle.

Over the past 20 years or so the buzz word in employment has been ‘multi tasking’. If you look at job postings, you will invariably notice that each includes a phrase similar to ‘must be able to effectively handle multiple projects and objectives’. The problem is that science has proven we are not effective at multi-tasking and it actually reduces productivity.

While we are always going to be inundated with tasks at work or home, we can learn to become more productive by learning to FOCUS.

focus-acronymFOCUS: Follow One Course Until Success

FOCUS is the new trend towards single-tasking and it is showing good results. It involves a combination of consistent planning and good time management. This is how I am able to manage 3 businesses and my multiple hats of Executive Coach, Sales Trainer, Event Planner, Property Manager, Martial Arts Instructor, and father of 6.

Follow this link to a good article that will give you a few ideas about time management and the difference between being BUSY and being PRODUCTIVE.

Give me a call to learn more about planning and time management. Not every system is right for all. Finding your FOCUS with proper time management can create better productivity and relieve stress, but only if its the right system for you.

GOOD is the enemy of GREAT

goodI heard the saying that ‘Good is the enemy of Great’ a few decades ago and it’s one of those phrases that changes your whole outlook on life. At first you might think that this is trite, but think a little deeper for a moment about how a simple thought can change everything.

I was at the grocery store this morning picking up ingredients to make salsa. I much prefer homemade to jar. The cashier asked me how I’m doing today. Think about how common that is. Everywhere you go people ask you how’s your day, how are you doing, how’s it going, etc. The question is so common that we probably get asked 10 times a day. Unfortunately, the answer is also so common, as most people don’t even think about it and auto-respond with…”Good, and how are you?” But, are you really GOOD?

Why do we auto-respond with GOOD all day, when we might not be good? And, who wants to be good anyway? Good is such a mediocre, blase’, thoughtless, answer. Do you really want to be good, or do you want to be something more?

My standard answer when people ask me this question 10 times a day, is not a standard answer. This morning I answered GREAT! I will often answer fantastic, terrific, wicked awesome, superb, absolutely amazing, couldn’t be better, or some other phrase that challenges me to actually use some imagination when answering that mundane question. In fact, my goal is to answer using a different and more powerful adjective the whole day every time someone asks me.

When I answer in this fashion it freaks people out a little and they will invariably ask, “What makes you great today?” To this I answer, “Because I don’t get out of bed for just GOOD.” That usually ends the conversation and leaves people with a quizzical look on their faces. This is a my general attitude about life. It’s not worth living if it’s only going to be good, as I aspire to be so much more and, if I’m not prepared to be anything more than good today, then I’m staying in bed until I’m ready to achieve greatness.

When you get out of bed in the morning, what is the first thought on your mind. Is it “YES! I’m ready to take on the world today!” or “Crap! It’s Monday again.” Words have power. Thoughts create beliefs. Beliefs shape your destiny.

If your goal in life is to be average and mindlessly/thoughtlessly answer ‘good’ all day, then go ahead, be good. If you aspire to greatness, then you cannot be good, you must be so much more. Good is the enemy of Great as it is average and great is never average. Nobody ever became great by doing average deeds with average thoughts.

Now, take that thought even farther. Do you aspire to good at your job? Are you a good husband or wife? Are you a good parent? Are you a good teacher? Are you a good leader? Are you a good friend? If all you want to be is good, then that’s what you will be. If good is good enough for you, then I’m happy for you. Congratulations, you have joined the 99% percent who believe that is all they are capable of.

For me, I think today I want to be “Extremely and profoundly excited and thankful to be alive”. Yes, that is today’s phrase, belief, thought process, theme, mantra, and mission.

Is your company good or great? The same thought process that you as a leader must adopt, is also true for the entire company. This lesson is part of the process of Transformational Leadership. When a company is good and desires to make the transformation to become great, this requires a shift in the culture and climate of the organization. The Greatness Mindset is one of the concepts that I coach companies and executives on. Transformational Leadership is all about making the change from good to great. It requires a strong mission, a long-term plan, and solid communication that conveys the vision to the team, accompanied by leadership that sets the example. All of this is required to change the culture and climate so that it moves in the direction of greatness.
